BIG NIGHT OUT
2023-2024
here is my project “Big Night Out” it started with black and white illustrations of things glimpsed when exploring the world of clubs and late night adventures .
the aims of this project was to create a visual diary of my own experiences that could appeal to a wider audience sharing the Big Night Out.
The evolution of this project from black-and-white illustrations is quite important to me. When I first began this project i had discovered a fresh interest into the artist Aubrey Beardsley who is known as an illustrator of nightlife. It is undeniable that his work influenced my own, but I fell in love with the caricature nature that I was presenting these people in the exaggerated manoeuvres, features and expressions as I felt that it would allow for a clearer reading of the stories I was trying to portray.
My style in this project evolved into these more realistic looking watercolours of people eating kebabs I wanted to make the transition from nightlife to journey home more clear. My project was no longer about the hustle and bustle of clubs and pubs but about the drunken crawl to the Closest greasy food van, which was always the inevitable end of a night out. I wanted to have a sort of comedic element to these paintings so I made them emulate religious renaissance style paintings with an exaggerated halo around the subject and titles to match. MadDoner a play on the religious Madonna and child but also Doner Kebab.
Whilst doing this project, I also challenged myself to work with oil pastel for the first time which led to a series of studies around club culture.
i also made a few short films to go along side this project. One was made with my illustrations and the other with photos I took that inspired my illustrations. This was to experiment with film making as I was interested in new way to create narratives.
