Jocelyn Hoskin Hay
Artist
statement
The art I create involves a wide range of materials such as oil pastel, oil paints, charcoal and soft pastels. I feel that my methods of creating with a wide variety of different mediums are constantly evolving and are as much a part of my art as the final product. As an artist having a repetitive style is not what is important to my working methods but rather experimenting and allowing my works to change as i do.
I follow this belief when it comes to my practice with each of my major projects being entirely different.
For example, my first major project was exploring elements of nightlife that I witnessed at freshers and experiencing club nights for the first time. Due to a delayed night life experience as a result of COVID.
My second project focused on my nostalgia of lipstick. As a young woman raised in a consumerist society in which ideas And stereotypes of beauty were placed upon me from a young age.
Now My art is exploring my upbringing on Dartmoor. The relationship between the interest in folklore that was instilled into me in a household where both parents have respect and love for local Myths and Legends, combined with my spiritual beliefs as a pagan. With my main goal to focus around my connections with the different Neolithic sites of the UK and how I have interacted with standing stones throughout my life. And that involves exploring how to reflect on the natural and spiritual world around me and how it manifests itself to me.
for a brief example of these different styles and projects please refer to the slides below or follow the menu for a more in-depth look into my different projects.
